After more than a year and a half and countless jobs, we finally leave Panamarina. For our first trip, we only plan to cover a short distance. After the long refit, we want to make sure that everything is actually working as it should. Our destination is Portobelo, already on the way to the Panama Canal.
The passage goes smoothly, and the engine purrs along as we hoped. In the historic bay, we drop anchor and enjoy being back at anchor at last. Mabul swings comfortably into the wind with every change in direction, making life on board much more pleasant in the tropical heat. And most importantly, there is finally a new view to wake up to when we look out of the companionway in the morning. We spend plenty of time on the SUP and explore the many small rivers around Portobelo by dinghy. Along the way, we encounter plenty of birds and, time and again, caimans. In between, there is pizza, we meet up with the crew of SV Siella again, and get to know Jan, who is cycling from Alaska all the way to Patagonia. Meanwhile, we wait for our transit date for the Panama Canal. When it finally arrives, it is time to tidy up, lift the anchor and move on.
